DRC THE SOLUTION COUNTRY, A BEACON OF HOPE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

As the solution country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is celebrating World Environmental Day on the 5th of June, a globally celebrated event dedicated to raising awareness and taking action on pressing environmental issues. This year’s theme is “land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” underscores the urgent need to address environmental degradation and its impact on ecosystems and communities worldwide. It is noteworthy that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be hosting the 2024 World Environment Day global celebrations. As the host nation, Saudi Arabia will play a pivotal role in shaping the campaign for the year and shedding light on specific regional environmental challenges. This presents an opportunity to mobilize efforts towards sustainable practices and policy changes on a global scale.
In recent developments, the DRC has been recognized as a “solution country” for climate change due to its carbon-dense forests and abundant mineral resources essential for clean technologies. The launch of Greenpeace Africa on March 21st, 2024, marks a significant milestone for Central Africa, as it establishes the first Climate Justice Movement in the region. This initiative aims to consolidate the efforts of grassroots organizations and local stakeholders in advocating for environmental preservation and addressing critical issues such as forest protection, climate change, and the rights of local communities and indigenous peoples in Africa (Africa GreenPeace 2024).
World Environment Day holds significance in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in ensuring good health and well-being (SDG 3), taking climate action (SDG 13), and preserving life on land (SDG 15). This year’s theme, “land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental preservation and sustainable practices. The DRC boasts a remarkable natural landscape, encompassing over 150 million hectares of tropical rainforest and more than 100 km2 of peatlands. Additionally, the DRC holds 10% of the world’s fresh water reserves and absorbs a staggering 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Notably, the DRC paved the way as the first African nation to convene the PRE-COP27 in 2022, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s commitment to tackling climate change. This initiative positioned the DRC as a pivotal player in addressing global climate challenges, showcasing its dedication to becoming a solution country in the face of the climate crisis.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment, Eve Bazaiba emphasised during the pre-cop27 event in kinshasa: “the DRC’s significant role in combating climate change, stressing the nation’s rich natural resources as integral to the ongoing ecological transition. The DRC’s involvement in key climate initiatives underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability and signifies its position at the forefront of climate change discussions.”
The vision of the Climate Justice Movement in the DRC is centered around sustainable and responsible natural resource management to enhance the well-being of communities, safeguard forests, and uphold the rights of local forest communities and indigenous peoples. As part of its commitment, the DRC has set an ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 21% by 2030, signalling an improvement from its previous goals. While significant progress is anticipated, it is essential to continue striving for even more substantial reductions to effectively combat climate change and its far-reaching consequences.
World Environment Day serves as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to preserve and protect our planet. By recognizing the efforts of nations such as Saudi Arabia and the initiatives spearheaded in the DRC, we reaffirm our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development for generations to come.
